Everyone with blonde hair has tried it once and whether your hair is dyed or naturally blonde, a silver shampoo can help you get the right cool tone. I, too, have dyed, bleached my hair and now have highlights to give my already blonde hair more depth in colour. I have tried quite a few silver shampoos in this time, so time to list my experiences with these different shampoos!
Looking for the best silver shampoos
It has been almost 1.5 years since I started working at Salontopper and since then I have tried out a lot of hair products. I also died my hair from my own dark blonde to grey in that time. Unfortunately, the grey colour didn't last and the lightened blonde hair remained. I liked this look too, but then I really needed a silver shampoo. Otherwise my hair would quickly turn yellow. After that I switched to highlights because the dark roots are a lot less noticeable and it looks more natural. I also need a silver shampoo for my highlights to keep the colour of my hair nice and clear.
So lately I have been trying out quite a few silver shampoos and especially when they were new. Not all silver shampoos are the same and I certainly noticed that. Because my hair has been bleached and I have highlights now, my hair tends to have a yellow undertone. With silver shampoo I can neutralise this yellow glow, but proper care is also important. Not all silver shampoos work the same, which is why I am happy to share my experiences with you here!
Silver shampoo colour neutralisation and care
In order to make a good comparison, I give stars for the colour neutralisation and the care that the shampoos provide for the hair. The colour neutralisation is based on the strength of the neutralisation, are yellow tones gone in one use or do you need to use it more often. Then there is the care it provides. Removing warm and yellow tones from hair with silver shampoo can be quite drying on the hair. Of course, I always supplement the care with a conditioner, but sometimes an extra mask is necessary. The number of stars is purely based on the shampoo, the more drying the hair the fewer stars.
Fanola No Yellow Shampoo - Best colour neutralization
My first contact with professional silver shampoo was the Fanola No Yellow Shampoo. After I dyed my hair grey I wanted to keep the yellow glow away. The grey washed out quickly so I had to keep the bleached hair underneath cool in colour. With this Fanola Silver Shampoo I succeeded perfectly. The colour neutralisation of the purple pigments in this silver shampoo is really the best I have had. The only drawback is that this shampoo contains little or no caring ingredients. This leaves your hair feeling very dry after use, so you can't use the shampoo too often and really need to do a conditioning routine afterwards!
American Crew Daily Silver Shampoo - truly a silver shampoo for men
As a man, of course I had to try this one! This American Crew Daily Silver Shampoo, according to the name, can be used on a daily basis and I found that quite unusual for a silver shampoo, because usually you can't because of the drying effect of silver shampoo. However, with this silver shampoo for men, it really was possible! The formula of this shampoo is thinner than other shampoos and contains fewer pigments, which means that it does not have as strong an effect, but it is also less drying. Still, I found the effect of this silver shampoo
strong enough, especially if you use it more often. I used it once or twice a week and the effect was strong enough.
Olaplex Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo No. 4P - Best Silver Shampoo Ever
When it was new in our shop, everyone was curious about the effect of the Olaplex Silver Shampoo. Olaplex is many people's favourite brand for haircare, but whether it would work for colour neutralisation remained to be seen. The shampoo seemed lighter than other silver shampoos so the expectation was that the purple pigments would not be as strong, but nothing was further from the truth. The Olaplex Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo No. 4P is really nice! The shampoo neutralises well, so your hair gets a cooler colour. But after using it, your hair is not dried out at all. Where other silver shampoos leave something to be desired in terms of care, the Olaplex silver shampoo was really perfect, good colour neutralisation and good care!
L'Oréal Professionnel Chroma Crème - new in 2022
Finally, I tried the L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Chroma Crème Purple Shampoo. This new L'Oréal Professionnel silver shampoo was launched in early 2022 and it comes from the Serie Expert Chroma Crème line with other colour-neutralising shampoos. I used the purple shampoo or silver shampoo in this line for my blonde hair. This L'Oréal silver shampoo needs less time to work than most silver shampoos because of the strong effect of the purple pigments, and this Chroma Creme shampoo does not dry out the hair, thanks to the caring elements in the shampoo. It quickly gave my hair a cooler look and I didn't necessarily need to use a mask afterwards, but a conditioner was still necessary.
Hopefully this comparison of silver shampoos will help you achieve your cool blonde look! If you have another favourite, please let me know, I'm always curious about new products.
Have a good one,
