Styling products for short and long hair

We all use styling products, some more than others. Which products you use depends on the length and style of your hair. Some prefer to use a hairspray and others a texture spray. So what you need differs per hair type. What is actually good for short/long hair and which styling product is best to use to achieve the desired result? Read all about it in this blog!

Styling products for short hair

Do you have short hair? Then you most probably use styling products to create a desired style in your hair. This could be a crest, a pixie fringe look or what is hot right now; a mullet haircut. Short hair often uses a wax, clay, gel or pomade. They are available in different types, think of various hold factors with a matt finish or, on the contrary, with a beautiful shine.

For thick and coarse hair

Do you have thick/rigid hair? Then your hair often goes its own way and does everything it can to "thwart" your look. This basically tells you that you need a product with a strong hold factor. This can be a clay, a product that you need to rub warm before you want to style your hair. For example, we are big fans of Sebastian Craft Clay, it gives a strong hold with a matt finish. Still, do you prefer shine with a rock-solid hold? Then Wella Eimi sculp force gel is a must! In short, gel also provides strong hold in the hair and helps keep crowns in place. With wax, you also have the choice of a matt look or a shiny end result. A wax is generally not as strong as a gel or clay. Want to be able to restyle your hair? Then go for a wax.

For fine and thin hair

For fine and thin hair, all these products can of course be used, with the exception of gel. Gel makes the hair sit together faster as ''groups'', which makes it look less and is not pleasant with fine hair. With wax, clay or pomade, hair can be better distributed. However, we recommend not going for a strong hold as fine hair does not necessarily need this. A wax / pomade is slightly greasier and allows you to restyle your hair all day long. You also have water-based pomades, which you can easily rinse out again. If you opt for an oil variant, we recommend cleaning your hair thoroughly as otherwise the residue will remain in your hair and it will quickly become greasy. Of course, many of you will finish the look with a finishing spray.

Styling products for long hair

For long hair, you do not specifically need styling products with strong hold. With long hair, it is often nice to give the roots more hold. Whether you have thin or thick hair, it is always important to use the right shampoo, conditioner and/or hair mask. With thick hair, you are more likely to opt for extra nourishment or anti-frizz. With thin hair, you are more likely to opt for extra volume. This is always the basis for your styling. With long hair it is also important to take good care of your ends, put in some hair oil after every wash to prevent dryness. Do you have thin/stony hair? Then we recommend using a lightweight oil to make your hair less heavy.

What styling products to use with long hair:

A fine mouse helps to strengthen your hair, use a small amount in damp hair for more volume, especially at the roots. For volume at the roots, use a fine volume powder or a roots spray. This avoids having to backcomb your hair and prevents a lot of damage. Want a beachy look? Then try a sea salt spray. Of course the finishing spray is essential, to make your parting fall nicely or to give your curl some firmness and keep your beautifully styled hair in shape. Still going for a sleek look? Then a gel will come in handy again with longer hair.

Tip from hair expert Dana:

Important to know: don't use products that contain non-water-soluble silicones. Silicones put a layer over your hair and actually cause the desired volume to collapse again. The build-up layer created by silicones also makes it difficult to wash out. If you keep repeating this over and over again, you will quickly notice that your hair becomes lifeless, hangs faster or feels greasy. Beware, this applies especially to straight hair.
