What are sulphates?

Sulphates are foaming cleansers commonly found in shampoo, shower gel and toothpaste. They are used to effectively remove dirt and grease from hair and skin. The best-known types are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). A product can be free of SLS/SLES but still contain other sulphates. Although sulphates clean well, they can also be drying when used frequently. Especially people with dry, coloured, curly or sensitive hair often experience that their hair frizzes faster or that the scalp gets irritated after using a standard shampoo with sulphates.

Advantages of a shampoo without sulphates

Using a shampoo without sulphates or a sulphate-free shampoo has several advantages:

  • Milder on your hair and scalp: Less likely to cause dryness or irritation.
  • Preservation of hair colour: Ideal for coloured or bleached hair.
  • Less frizz: Especially curly and dry hair benefits from milder cleansing.
  • Suitable for daily use: Cleanses without completely removing natural oils.
  • Better in combination with natural hair care: Matches routines without harsh ingredients.

Want an extra mild option? Then opt for shampoo without sulphates and parabens, keeping your hair free from both foaming and preservatives that can sometimes be drying or irritating.

How do you recognise a shampoo without sulphates?

Check the label of your shampoo for ingredients such as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate). If you cannot find these, it is often a sulphate-free shampoo. Many brands also state this explicitly on the packaging with terms like "sulphate-free" or "SLS/SLES free". Any ingredient ending in sulphate means the product contains sulphates.

Who is a sulphate-free shampoo suitable for?

A sulphate-free shampoo is ideal for:

  • People with sensitive scalps or easily dry hair.
  • Curly and frizzy hair, where natural oils are better preserved.
  • Coloured or chemically treated hair that needs extra protection.
  • Anyone switching to a gentler or natural hair care routine.
  • Fans of the Curly Girl Method, avoiding SLS/SLES.
