What exactly is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is more than just a skin problem. The cause of psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which the body mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells. This leads to accelerated cell growth, causing thick, scaly patches on the skin. These spots can occur anywhere on the body, but are most common on the elbows, knees, lower back and scalp.

Important facts about psoriasis

  • It is not contagious
  • It can start at any age, but often starts between 15 and 35 years old
  • Stress, certain medications and infections can make psoriasis worse
  • There are different forms of psoriasis, each with its own characteristics

Symptoms of psoriasis

Symptoms of psoriasis can vary from person to person. Common signs include:

  • Red, inflamed skin patches covered in flakes
  • Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
  • Itching, burning or pain
  • Thickened, pitted or grooved nails
  • Stiff and swollen joints

Treatment of psoriasis

Although there is no cure for psoriasis, there are several products available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. The choice of products depends on the severity of the condition and the location of the spots. Make sure to keep your skin well moisturised by using the right creams.

Psoriasis on the scalp

Psoriasis scalp is a common form of psoriasis that involves red, scaly and itchy patches on the scalp. This skin condition can range from mild, with fine flakes, to severe, with thick crusts covering the entire scalp. Psoriasis on the scalp can also spread to the neck, forehead and behind the ears. Triggers such as stress, cold and infections can worsen symptoms. Treatments include special medicated shampoos, creams and, in some cases, light therapy, to reduce flaking and calm inflammation.

Psoriasis nails

Psoriasis can also affect the nails, which is known as nail psoriasis. This involves changes in the appearance and structure of the nails, such as pitting, discolouration, thickening and brittleness. Sometimes the nails can partially detach from the nail bed (onycholysis) or even cause pain. Nail psoriasis is common in people with psoriasis on the skin and can cause functional discomfort. Treatment of nail psoriasis is difficult.

Psoriasis guttata

Psoriasis guttata is a form of psoriasis characterised by small, drop-shaped red patches on the skin. These spots usually appear suddenly and often cover large areas of the body, such as the trunk, arms and legs. Psoriasis guttata usually occurs in children and adults and is often triggered by a throat infection caused by streptococcus. Although symptoms may be milder than other forms of psoriasis, the condition can cause itching and discomfort. For a mild form of psoriasis guttata, you can use a cream or ointment daily to keep the skin supple.
