Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness, inflammation, and visible blood vessels on the face. This condition is often confused with acne, but differs in cause and treatment. Rosacea most commonly appears on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, and can worsen over time without treatment. People with rosacea may also experience burning sensations, swelling, and in some cases, pimples and bumps, which further distinguishes rosacea from other skin issues.

What causes rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but a combination of genetic factors, immune responses and environmental factors may contribute to its onset. Certain triggers such as sun, stress, alcohol and spicy food can cause hot flushes and worsen the condition.

Symptoms of rosacea

Rosacea has several forms, including rosacea pityriasis. Symptoms vary from person to person, but the most common symptoms are:

  • Redness and flushing: The most prominent symptom of rosacea is persistent facial redness, especially on the cheeks and nose.
  • Inflamed bumps: Rosacea, like acne, can be accompanied by red pimples and inflammation.
  • Visible blood vessels: Small blood vessels may become visible through the skin, especially in long-term rosacea.
  • Rosacea pityriasis: This form is milder and characterised by mild scaling and redness.

Treatment of rosacea

Rosacea cannot be completely cured, but there are several treatments that can reduce symptoms and prevent further worsening. Effective rosacea treatment often involves a combination of skin care and avoiding triggers.

  • Rosacea cream: Specific creams for rosacea often contain ingredients such as niacinamide, azelaic acid and green tea extract to soothe redness and calm the skin. A good rosacea cream can reduce redness and inflammation while strengthening the skin barrier.
  • Medication and antibiotics: For more severe forms of rosacea, antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to control inflammation.
  • Laser therapy: For the removal of visible blood vessels, laser therapy can be effective. This can be especially useful for prolonged redness and visible veins on the skin.
  • Soothing care products: Products designed specifically for sensitive skin can reduce irritation and support the skin barrier. Avoid harsh products that can dry out the skin.

Acne and rosacea: Differences and similarities

Although rosacea and acne can look similar, they are different skin diseases. Rosacea involves redness and inflammation without the typical blackheads (comedones) that are common in acne. When choosing a treatment, it is important to take these differences into account. A rosacea cream is often milder and specifically aimed at reducing redness, while acne creams often target sebum regulation and can be irritating to the sensitive skin of people with rosacea.

Tips for dealing with rosacea

  • Avoid triggers: Identify and avoid triggers such as sunlight, spicy food, alcohol and stress to prevent flare-ups.
  • Use sun protection: An SPF of at least 30 is essential to protect the skin from UV rays, which can aggravate rosacea.
  • Gentle skincare: Choose mild, fragrance-free products and avoid scrubs or other exfoliants that can irritate the skin.

With the right treatment, such as a soothing rosacea cream, people with rosacea can manage their symptoms and calm the skin. A good skincare routine and professional treatments can make all the difference for healthy, less irritated skin.
