Kinky hair

Afro hair is a unique and beautiful hair texture that deserves special care. This type of hair, also known as frizzy hair, is characterised by tight, bouncy curls or coils and has a natural tendency to be voluminous and dry. Afro hair has a particularly fine structure, but can also be very strong and resilient. However, it does require a specific approach in terms of care and styling to make it shine optimally. There are different types of frizzy hair, and it is important to know which type you have.

What is frizzy or afro hair?

Curly hair, also called afro hair, is a hair type is characterised by very tight, small curls or spiral patterns that are densely packed. In the curl type system, frizzy hair is generally classified under type 4, with subtypes 4A, 4B and 4C. Type 4A has defined, spiral curls, while 4B has more of a z-shaped pattern with less obvious curl definition. Type 4C is the most compact and fragile, with a very tight curl pattern that naturally has less shine and can be more quickly dry or brittle. Frizzy hair needs lots of hydration and gentle care to stay healthy and resilient.

Brands aimed at frizzy hair

At Salontotal.co.uk, we sell several brands that focus on curly, afro and frizzy hair. These brands are often inspired by a strong nourishing ingredient. From grooming to styling, these products are optimised for afro hair.

Washing afro hair: all about the co-wash

Because afro hair needs a lot of nourishment and moisture, it is important to wash and care for your hair in the right way. First of all, be careful not to wash your frizzy hair too often with a shampoo: a shampoo removes the (natural) oils from your frizzy hair and these oils are exactly what your hair needs. Nowadays, a solution has been found for this: the co-wash! It's already in the name: co-wash stands for conditioner-wash. This means you wash your hair with a conditioner instead of a shampoo, providing your hair with extra nourishment while washing it. Your hair will not dry out, but stay nice and bouncy. Curls will also keep their shape better this way. Despite the co-wash invention, do not completely stop washing your hair with shampoo: it is important that product residues but also, for example, sweat are washed out of your hair. Therefore, wash your hair with a shampoo once a week, but choose a nourishing and/or moisturising shampoo for enough moisture.

Complementary products for perfect afro hair

Besides using the right care products, there are also other factors that will make your hair stay beautiful longer or break earlier. Namely, have you ever thought of using a satin pillowcase? Satin ensures your hair stays beautifully healthy and hydrated, because materials and fabrics like cotton actually draw the moisture out of your hair. And this applies not only to cotton pillowcases, but also to cotton clothes! Then try wearing your hair tied up, for instance.

Apart from this, there are brushes specifically aimed at grooming and styling afro or frizzy hair. Like the detangling brush that aims to detangle easily and ensure less hair breakage than regular brushes.
