Curly Girl Method

At its core, the CG method is a hair care routine that allows you to get the best out of your curls through proper hydration and nourishment. The method encourages, among other things, washing your hair with conditioner or co-wash. When using the method, you also make sure that the products you use do not contain sulfates, silicones, drying alcohol, or mineral oils. After following this method, you will notice that your curls are healthy and beautifully shiny again!

CG Method

The Curly Girl (CG for short) Method was developed by American Lorraine Massey and has since gone around the world. Since its inception, however, it has been modernised and adapted in recent years. The method is not brand-related and there are no marketing tricks behind it! Whether you have super straight hair, or very fine curls; the CG Method is basically suitable for any hair type, but especially for naturally curly hair.

Starting with the Curly Girl Method

The time has come... you want to start using the CG Method. The following two points are the basics:

  • You start with a final wash of the hair. During this wash, you wash your hair one more time with sulphates. Why? Because a product with sulphate is an aggressive cleanser and ensures that your build-up is removed.
  • After the final wash, use a deep conditioner. After the wash, it is very important to moisturise and nourish your hair as it can be very dry. With a deep conditioner, you make sure you prevent damage.

CG Products

There are different types of products you can use while implementing the CG method. For example, consider a:

  • Cowash: is in between a shampoo and conditioner.
  • CG shampoo: product with cleansing ingredients.
  • Gel: makes sure your curls dry frizz-free and in the right shape.
  • Curl activator: conditions your hair and can enhance the effect of styling products.
  • Denman Styling Brush: a brush ideal for styling your curls.

It is very important to avoid a number of ingredients when following the CG method. These ingredients are: silicones, alcohol, sulphates, mineral oils and wax.

At Salontopper, you will find a wide range of products for all hair types, but not all products are Curly Girl proof. It takes a lot of time to check which product is CG friendly and exactly which ingredients should and should not be in your conditioner or styling product. That is why we have added the CG Proof label to products that are CG proof, so you don't have to search long for Curly Girl products!

Curious about exactly which ingredients to avoid and what the CG label means? In our blog 'Curly Girl Proof: What ingredients to avoid', we explain what our label is based on.
