Tips for scalp problems

Scalp issues such as oily/dry scalps and dandruff are common. It is important to know where these problems come from so you know what to do about them. We talked to one of the hairdressers at TEASE and asked her about scalp problems.

Different types of scalp problems

Scalp problems come in many different forms. In this blog I will tell you more about the most common scalp problems: a dry/oily scalp and dandruff. These problems have different causes. It could be the season we are in, the products you use or an imbalance in your hormones. Not all problems have a permanent solution but there are certainly ways of alleviating or reducing them.

Origins of scalp problems

I will go through the causes of each scalp problem with you. Please note: for everyone a scalp issue can have a different cause. It is therefore important to find out what the cause is before taking any further steps.

Dry scalp

A dry scalp occurs when the natural moisture balance is disrupted and can have several causes. Changes in outdoor temperature can have a big influence on your scalp. For example, the scalp may be flakier in winter than in summer. For example, the heating inside the house is often turned up high and this dries out the scalp. Other triggers could be using the wrong products or being under a lot of stress. A dry scalp is often confused with dandruff but these two scalp problems have different causes.

Oily scalp

Sebum production offers many benefits: it keeps hair supple, water-repellent and protects it from drying out and moisture loss. However, excessive sebum production can also result in an oily scalp. Excessive sebum production can be caused by running your hands through your hair a lot or by massaging the scalp too much when washing your hair.  Stress or hormonal changes can also be triggers for an oily scalp.

Dandruff

The scalp produces new cells every 14 days. When you suffer from dandruff the cell division proceeds too fast and the skin cells get stuck together, preventing the cells from releasing properly and thus remaining on the scalp. Dandruff often appears somewhat yellowish and oily. In addition to physical causes, stress, dry air and using the wrong products can make dandruff worse.

What can you do about it?

If you suffer from a dry scalp, it's important to massage your scalp to stimulate sebum production. Also make sure you use products that are suitable for a dry scalp, for example products that moisturize your scalp well. We recommend the following products:

With an oily scalp it is important to massage the scalp as little as possible and not to wash it with too hot water. Try not to wash your hair too often, as frequent washing will only stimulate sebum production. It is of course important to keep your hair clean, we recommend the following products:

Dandruff is something you carry with you and can never be completely eliminated by using products alone. However, there are products that help relieve dandruff. We recommend the following products:

Be aware of the amount of silicone and sulphates in the products you use. Your scalp is very sensitive to these. We therefore recommend that you always use professional products, as they often contain better ingredients.
